Founded in 2020, alterBiota is redefining how low-carbon concrete is produced through a platform that combines advanced biogenic materials with AI-driven aggregate intelligence. Rather than treating carbon reduction solely as a materials problem, we address a fundamental operational challenge: producers routinely overuse cement to compensate for the variability of locally sourced aggregates.
By reducing that variability through real-time intelligence with digitalΔggregate and replacing excess cement with ΔC, a carbon-negative liquid admixture made from stranded biomass, we improve concrete performance, lower production costs, reduce operational risk, and deliver meaningful emissions reductions.
All without disrupting the manufacturing processes plants already run.

Mark has spent nearly two decades in leadership across civil, environmental, power, and industrial infrastructure. With Chemical Engineering from Queen's and Engineering & Public Policy from McMaster, he channels that experience into large-scale innovation in green materials and energy at alterBiota.
Director of Digital Technologies
Vivek holds a BEng in Chemical Engineering and an MEng Design in Process and Production Systems from McMaster University. With expertise spanning process engineering, software, data, and AI, he contributes to process development and optimization while leading the development of the company's digital products and technologies.
Director of Concrete Technologies
Alex has nearly a decade of experience decarbonizing cement and concrete, spanning research, product development, and QC on mega projects. A Civil Engineering graduate of Dalhousie and member of the NRG COSIA XPRIZE-winning team, he brings global technology and field expertise to alterBiota.
Director of Operations and Quality
Paul has spent over three decades in manufacturing, from QC and lab leadership to process and plant management. He brings ISO and lean systems experience that gives alterBiota structure without slowing entrepreneurial ideas.
Manager, Midstream R&D
Swomitra earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Soft Matter Physics at Memorial University, studying how polymers and nanoparticles interact in complex systems. He applies that expertise in multicomponent colloids to alterBiota's novel liquid biochar admixture products.
Manager, Concrete R&D
Mayra holds an MASc and Ph.D. in Civil Materials Engineering from the University of Ottawa, with a decade of work in sustainable mix design. She specializes in low-carbon concrete, aggregate packing, and durability, with 20+ peer-reviewed papers and membership on ACI 211, 221, and 241.
Manager, Upstream R&D
Trevor holds a master's in physics from Dalhousie and more than 15 years of R&D experience. He develops cleaner process technologies that convert mined ore and waste tailings into value-added industrial materials with lower environmental impact.

Chris holds a BA from Cape Breton University and an HRM certificate from Saint Mary's, with more than 15 years in the concrete industry. He has worked from batcher to plant manager overseeing production and trucking fleets on large-scale projects.

Caitlyn holds a diploma in Environmental Engineering Technology and five years in the sustainable concrete industry. She leads research projects and testing programs focused on lower-impact concrete solutions.

Matthew studied electrical technology at NSCC before working in the trades forming and placing residential concrete in Cape Breton. That field experience is a strong asset to alterBiota's concrete testing team.
